Patio blinds are made out of a variety of materials. Bamboo is quickly becoming a new favorite for it's eco friendly and unique design. Plastic, cloth and woven materials are usually used, but new types of materials are being developed and tested. Some choose to pair up blinds and materials to be used as a type of window treatment. The vertical blind is frequently accompanied by cloth curtains, just as french blinds are paired with valances.
First and foremost, probably one of the most important blind accessories is a cleat or a cord holdfast. A cleat can be a plastic or metal object with two projecting horns to which cords may be fastened by winding the cord around the horns, to keep them from slipping. A cord holdfast as the name depicts is used to hold the cords "fast" by winding the cord around a peg which is normally angled at about 45 degrees. So that when a blind, for example a venetian blind, is pulled up, the cords can be secured to the cleat or holdfast to prevent the blind from coming down.
